Prussia 1747-BID 1/4 stuber
This specimen was lot 3694 in Künker sale 353 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €650 (about US$905 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"BRANDENBURG-PREUSSEN, PREUSSEN, KÖNIGREICH, Friedrich II. der Große, 1740-1786. 1/4 Stüber 1747, BID, Aurich. Prägung für die westlichen Landesteile. Breites Monogramm. Münzmeister Bernhard Julius Dedekind. RR Sehr schön. Erworben am 19.11.1988 von Wolfgang Rittig, Schwelm. (Germany, kingdom of Prussia, Frederick II the Great, 1740-86, quarter stuiver of 1747, Aurich mint, struck for the western provinces. Broad monogram. Very rare, very fine.)"
Aurich was the capital of the county of Ostfriesland, which was ruled by its native princes until the extinction of the line in 1744, whereupon it fell to the Hohenhollerns, who retained the mint there. The Prussians lost the province to Napoleon in 1807 and it passed to Hannover at the Congress of Vienna. This is a rare one year type. The SCWC notes that one thaler was thirty stuber in one spot but equal to 54 stuber in another. Different thalers might be intended.
Recorded mintage: 97,000.
Specification: billon, this specimen 0,88 g.
