Künker sale 353, lot 3756

This specimen was lot 3756 in Künker sale 353 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €120 (about US$167 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRANDENBURG-PREUSSEN, PREUSSEN, KÖNIGREICH, Friedrich II. der Große, 1740-1786. 2 Gröschel 1747, AHE, Breslau. Prägung für die Provinz Schlesien. Mit SIL D am Ende der Vorderseitenumschrift. Münzmeister Adam Heinrich von Ehrenberg. Vorzüglich-Stempelglanz. Exemplar der Slg. Friedrich Otto, Rittergut Passendorf, Auktion Leipziger Münzhandlung 35, Leipzig 2003, Nr. 5500. (Germany, kingdom of Prussia, Frederick II the Great, 1740-86, two groschel of 1747, Breslau mint, struck for the province of Silesia, with "SIL D" at the end of the obverse legend. Extremely fine to uncirculated.)"

After Frederick the Great seized Silesia in 1742, he issued kreuzer denominated coinage for the province which did not directly convert into the thaler-based coinage used in the rest of the realm. One, three, six, 15 and 18 kreuzer were issued along with one and two groschel pieces. This type is listed for 1745-50 and seems to have been made in large quantities. The last two groschel was struck in 1786.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: billon, this specimen 1,08 g.

Catalog reference: KM 921.1 (listed under Silesia), Olding 317 b; Kluge 310.3.
