Künker sale 353, lot 3683

This specimen was lot 3683 in Künker sale 353 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €500 (about US$696 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRANDENBURG-PREUSSEN, PREUSSEN, KÖNIGREICH, Friedrich II. der Große, 1740-1786. Mariengroschen 1747, BID, Aurich. Prägung für die westlichen Landesteile. Münzmeister Bernhard Julius Dedekind. Von großer Seltenheit. Rauher Schrötling, sehr schön. Exemplar der Auktion Galerie des Monnaies 25, Düsseldorf 1981, Nr. 205. (Germany, kingdom of Prussia, Frederick II the Great, 1740-86, mairengroschen of 1747, Aurich mint, struck for the western provinces. Extremely rare, rough fields, very fine.)"

Aurich was the capital of the county of Ostfriesland, which was ruled by its native princes until the extinction of the line in 1744, whereupon it fell to the Hohenhollerns, who retained the mint there. The Prussians lost the province to Napoleon in 1807 and it passed to Hannover at the Congress of Vienna. This is a rare two year type. The SCWC notes that one thaler was 36 mariengroschen.

Recorded mintage: 139,000 for 1747-48.

Specification: 1.43 g, 0.312 fine silver, 17.5 mm diameter, this specimen 1,48 g.

Catalog reference: KM 201 (listed under East Friesland), Olding 253; Kluge 260.1.
