Mexico 1897-Zs Z 10 centavos

from the Stack's Bowers sale of the Kirk Menczer Collection, lot 71467

This specimen was lot 71467 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, October 2025), where it sold for $264. The catalog description^[1] noted, "MEXICO. 10 Centavos, 1897-Z_ Z. Zacatecas Mint. NGC VF-30. Error with missing "s" in mintmark. Only example graded by NGC. Rare error. Normal date. From the Kirk Menczer Collection of Republican Decimal Minors." This date marks the last in a series of “Z Z” errors, where the “s” was omitted from the mintmark. Similar errors are known for 1885, 1888, 1890 and 1896. The SCWC mentions an 1897/6 overdate. Zacatecas also struck the ten centavos with the redesigned eagle 1898-1905.

Recorded mintage: 900,000, a common date.

Specification: 2.70 g, 0.903 fine silver, 18 mm diameter, reeded edge.
