The first specimen was lot 25336 in Heritage sale 3015 (Long Beach, September 2011), where it sold for $5,750. The catalog description[1] noted, "Republic 8 Reales 1897Zs-FZ, MS66 NGC, gorgeous gold and russet toning over full mint bloom - a most handsome example of this last date of the Zacatecas 8 Reales." We hasten to assure collectors contemplating this series that this date from the Zacatecas mint normally sells for a fraction of the price realized above. The Zacatecas mint issued this type 1825-97 and most dates are readily available.
