Mexico 1896-Mo M 10 centavos
This specimen is a scarce date of a series struck 1869-97 at the Mexico City mint. This ten centavos piece replaced the silver one real struck since colonial times. Several transitional designs were issued 1863-70, including one by the Maximilian regime, before settling on this type. It, in turn, was replaced by a ten centavos piece with a redesigned reverse in 1898. Assayer B/G is also recorded for the year, and that assayer is noted as common. This specimen was lot 8960 in Ponterio sale 159 (Baltimore, March 2011), where it sold for $517.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. Mexico City. 10 Centavos, 1896-MoM. Very rare in this high grade. Toned. NGC MS-65."
Specification: 2.707 g, 0.903 fine silver, 18 mm diameter, .078 troy oz ASW, reeded edge.
Recorded mintage: 340,000 (including assayer B).
