This specimen was lot 2769 in Ponterio sale 164 (New York, January 2012), where it sold for $373.75. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. Guanajuato. 8 Reales, 1896-Go/GaRS. RARE condition for this over mintmark. NGC MS-64." This date, the next to last for Guanajuato, is common but numerous varieties exist, including 1896/1, 1896/1-Go/As and the Go/Ga shown here. The Guanajuato mint closed in 1900.
