Mexico 1896-Mo B 20 pesos
This specimen was lot 1405 in Ponterio sale 182 (New York, January 2014), where it sold for $4,993.75. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. 20 Pesos, 1896-MoB. NGC MS-63. Finest certified by NGC or PCGS. An excellent and attractive example." This specimen is one of a series struck at the Mexico City mint 1870-1905. Although production was substantial, many dates are rare. Mintage figures are not a reliable indicator of rarity for this type due to the accidents of hoarding; many low mintage issues are readily available while other high mintage issues are very rare. This and the 1874/2 are the only known issues with assayer B.
Recorded mintage: 14,000.
Specification: 33.84 g, 0.875 fine gold, .952 troy oz AGW.
