This specimen was lot 24263 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (Newport Beach, CA, January 2021), where it sold for $456. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. Centavo, 1896-Mo. Mexico City Mint. PCGS MS-65 Brown Gold Shield. Tied with just two others for the finest in the PCGS census, this penultimate year of issue offers a tremendous deep brown nature with hints of burgundy and cobalt, and also presents a stunning array of lustrous brilliance radiating throughout." Mexico City struck this type 1869-81 and 1886-97 and is by far the largest producer. Mexico City was the only mint which struck centavos 1892-96.
