Stack's Bowers 2020 ANA sale, lot 23368

This specimen was lot 23368 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Las Vegas, August 2020), where it sold for $144. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. 8 Reales, 1830-Do RM. Durango Mint. PCGS VF-35 Gold Shield. A pleasant evenly worn example with a decent strike and rich gray patina." Some specimens of this date have a "B" on the eagle's claw (this example is too worn to tell). Supposedly the mintmaster added his initial to distinguish those made from debased silver, which debasement was done at the orders of a shortlived rebel movement.

Recorded mintage: unknown but a better date.

Specification: 27.07 g, 0.903 fine silver, .786 troy oz ASW.
