Mexico 1830-Zs OV 1/2 real
This specimen was lot 71006 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2023), where it sold for $120. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. 1/2 Real, 1830-Zs OV. Zacatecas Mint. PCGS AU-53. Only limitedly circulated and most impressive, this 1/2 Real displays much charm and appeal." Zacatecas and Guanajuato were the two mints that made a serious effort to produce minor coinage for local use; the other mints preferred to concentrate on striking eight reales for export. Zacatecas half reales are known for 1826-63 and 1869 and this is a common date. Assayer OV served 1829-31 but this is the only year known for half reales.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 1.69 g, 0.903 fine silver, .049 troy oz ASW.
