This specimen was lot 47138 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2024), where it sold for $216. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. Calmalli. Copper 4 Reales Token, ND (1894-97). PCGS MS-62." Calmalli is a village in Baja California Norte that was a gold mining district in the late nineteenth century. Altho decimal coinage had been in circulation for a quarter century by this time, this token is still denominated in reales. "TIENDA DE RAYA" translates as "clothing store", likely operated by one of the mining companies. Baja California was a territory, not a state, during the republic. Baja California Sur was split off in 1931 and the remainder became a state in 1952.
