SB1122-74632r.jpg

This specimen was lot 74632 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2022), where it sold for $216. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Brunswick. 24 Mariengroschen, 1750-IBH. Zellerfeld Mint. Karl I. PCGS AU-58. On the cusp of Mint State status, this elegant minor presents a mostly gunmetal gray tone with some enchanting, dazzling brilliance remaining. Some very minor planchet issues are noted upon the midsection of the wildman, but do not overly distract from his well rendered physique. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection." This denomination was one gulden or two-thirds of a thaler. This type was struck 1735-80 and is common. The concurrent "leaping stallion" gulden of the same weight was also a 24 mariengroschen (KM 895). Two-thirds thalers with the bust of the duke were also struck (KM 903, 973) but not in the 1740's and 1750's.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver.

Catalog reference: Dav-362; KM-870; Welter-2735.
