Steve Album Auction 53, lot 2925

The first specimen was lot 74512 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, September 2023), where it sold for $100. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Brunswick. 6 Mariengroschen (1/6 Taler), 1750-IBH. Zellerfeld Mint. Karl I. PCGS AU-58. This example offers great old argent cabinet toning with subtly lustrous surfaces. A very attractive coin with inconsequential wear. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection." This type was struck throughout Karl's long reign and is common. Six mariengroschen started out as one-sixth of a thaler but had slipped to an eighth thaler by the end of Karl's reign. The second specimen was lot 2925 in Steve Album Auction 53 (Santa Rosa, CA, September 2025), where it sold for $390. The catalog description[2] noted, "BRUNSWICK-WOLFENBÜTTEL: Karl I, 1735-1780, AR 6 mariengroschen, Zellerfeld, 1750, "Wildman" type, a lovely mint state example! PCGS graded MS63, ex Almer H. Orr III Collection. The Braunschweig Wildman refers to a mythological figure popularized in the Duchy of Brunswick-Lüneburg during the 16th to 18th centuries, particularly associated with the Harz Mountains region. This Wildman, often depicted as a hairy, muscular figure, and often holding a tree, was seen as both a protector of the silver mines and a symbol of the region, appearing on coins, in heraldry, and in folklore."

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 3.2 g, silver, 25 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: KM-872; Welter-2752.
