Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel 1751-IBH 6 mariengroschen
This specimen was lot 74513 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, September 2023), where it sold for $60. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Brunswick. 6 Mariengroschen (1/6 Taler), 1751-IBH. Zellerfeld Mint. Karl I. PCGS AU-55. A lovely dove-gray example of this type with cobalt, russet, and golden highlights. Very attractive. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection." This type was struck 1735-80 for Karl I and is common. Twenty-four mariengroschen made a gulden, which was originally two-thirds of a thaler but had slipped to half a thaler by the end of the reign. Another gulden of this reign featured the leaping stallion reverse (KM 895), altho it was not struck every year. Mintmaster IBH appears 1739-62.
