Brunswick-Luneburg-Calenberg 1690-HB 1/3 thaler KM-346
This specimen was lot 42271 in Stack's Bowers Winter sale (Baltimore, November 2015), where it sold for $141. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg-Calenberg. 1/3 Taler, 1690-HB. Ernst August (1679-98). NGC AU-58. Slightly more available type but seldom (if ever) encountered in such nice condition. This is confirmed by the coin's finest certified status at both NGC and PCGS by a whopping 13 point margin. Full facial features on Saint Andrew with light rub on the hair curls, the surfaces of the cross are fully original. Very pleasant overall color. Given the utility of its size, it's little wonder why 1/3 Taler pieces are typically heavily circulated. The piece offered here is truly exceptional, a coin you will not want to miss out on." This obscure little piece is recorded for 1690 and 1692. The 12 mariengroschen (KM 259) which was also valued at one third thaler, was struck 1680-92 and featured the duke's portrait.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: silver.
Catalog reference: KM-346.
