from Künker sale 354, lot 5665

This specimen was lot 5665 in Künker sale 354 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €85 (about US$118 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRAUNSCHWEIG UND LÜNEBURG, BRAUNSCHWEIG-LÜNEBURG, FÜRSTENTUM, Ernst August, 1679-1698, seit 1662 Bischof von Osnabrück. 2/3 Taler 1691, Hannover. Patina, fast vorzüglich. Aus der Sammlung eines Ingenieurs. Exemplar der Lagerliste Karl-Ludwig Grabow 91, Berlin 1975, Nr. 704. (Germany, duchy of Brunswick-Luneburg-Calenberg, Ernest Augustus, 1679-98, bishop of Osnabrück since 1662, two-thirds thaler of 1691, Hannover mint. Toned, about extremely fine.)"

This particular "leaping stallion" gulden has stars instead of the usual mintmaster's initials and was struck 1690-92. Other gulden of the period featured the wild man or St. Andrew on the reverse. The weight reported for this example is above normal.
