from Künker sale 354, lot 5664

This specimen was lot 5664 in Künker sale 354 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €130 (about US$181 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRAUNSCHWEIG UND LÜNEBURG, BRAUNSCHWEIG-LÜNEBURG, FÜRSTENTUM, Ernst August, 1679-1698, seit 1662 Bischof von Osnabrück. 2/3 Taler 1691, Clausthal. Feine Tönung, vorzüglich. Aus der Sammlung eines Ingenieurs. Exemplar der Auktion Fritz Rudolf Künker 20, Osnabrück 1991, Nr. 2216. (Germany, duchy of Brunswick-Luneburg-Calenberg, Ernest Augustus, 1679-98, bishop of Osnabrück since 1662, two-thirds thaler of 1691, Clausthal mint. Fine toning, extremely fine.)"

This particular "leaping stallion" gulden has mintmaster's initials "HB" and was struck 1690-93. Other gulden of the period featured the wild man or St. Andrew on the reverse.
