Brunswick-Luneburg-Calenberg 1691-RB thaler Dav-6591
This specimen was lot 72199 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, May 2023), where it sold for $456. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Calenberg. Taler, 1691-RB. Zellerfeld Mint. Ernst August, as Bishop of Osnabrück. PCGS AU-50. A few planchet flaws are noted, but this pleasing crown nevertheless exhibits only mild handling throughout along with a subtle tone. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection." This "wild man" thaler was struck 1680-87 and is fairly common. Many similar thalers exist. Dav-6592 and Dav-6593 have the date at the bottom, Dav-6594 has the mintmaster's initials on the shield side.
