Brunswick-Luneburg-Calenberg 1692-RB thaler Dav-6594
This specimen was lot 73550 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2023), where it sold for $312. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Calenberg. Taler, 1692-RB. Zellerfeld Mint. Ernst August. PCGS Genuine--Scratched, AU Details. Lustrous argent surfaces are graced with a most pleasing golden toning in the peripheries, with hints of russet and a glimpse of joyous cobalt on the reverse. Strong lettering with some soft areas within the design features. A very visually attractive piece. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection." This type was struck 1689 and 1692 and is fairly available. This example has a boldly repunched date and may be an overdate, 1692/9. The duke's name is abbreviated "ERNEST AUG:" whereas on previous issues, it was spelled out "ERNEST AUGUSTUS".
