Stack's Bowers 2023 ANA sale, lot 55633

This specimen was lot 55633 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Pittsburgh, PA, August 2023), where it sold for $288. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Calenberg. Taler, 1692-RB. Zellerfeld Mint. Ernst August. Extremely Fine Details -- Cleaned, Edge Filed. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection. Ex: Muenzenhandlung Harald Moeller Auction 50, Lot 2114" Christian Ludwig was duke in Calenberg 1641-48 and in Celle 1648-65. His younger brother Georg Wilhelm was duke in Calenberg 1648-65 and in Celle 1665-1705. Johann Friedrich, the third brother, was duke in Calenberg 1665-79. The last brother, Ernst August, was duke in Calenberg 1679-98 and elector of Hannover 1692-98. Ernst August's son George inherited Calenberg and Hannover in 1698, Celle in 1705 and the throne of Great Britain in 1714. Seven different thalers are listed for this state in 1692:

  • KM 325.6/Dav-6646 (bust obverse), 1692 only, rare;
  • KM 325.7/Dav-6647, 1692 only, rare;
  • KM 265.2/Dav-6594 (wild man), 1689 and 1692 only, fairly common;
  • KM 350/Dav-6615 (leaping stallion?), 1690 and 1692 only, rare;
  • KM 351.2/Dav-6626 (St. Andrew), 1692 only, very scarce;
  • KM 369/Dav-6596 (wild man, shown here), 1692 only, scarce;
  • KM 370/Dav-6648, 1692 only, unpriced.

The two wild man thalers (Dav-6594 and -6596) are the only ones not very scarce.
