Stack's Bowers 2022 ANA sale, lot 30226

This specimen was lot 30226 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2022), where it sold for $1,680. The catalog description^[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Calenburg. Taler, 1689-RB. Zellerfeld Mint. Ernst August. PCGS MS-62. Though a hint of peripheral striking weakness is noted along with some on the body of the wildman, this delightful, nearly-choice crown dazzles with an alluring cabinet tone, some hints of champagne augmenting the devices, very clean fields, and tremendous detail within the bearded forest-dweller. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection." Christian Ludwig was duke in Calenberg 1641-48 and in Celle 1648-65. His younger brother Georg Wilhelm was duke in Calenberg 1648-65 and in Celle 1665-1705. Johann Friedrich, the third brother, was duke in Calenberg 1665-79. The last brother, Ernst August, was duke in Calenberg 1679-98 and elector of Hannover 1692-98. Ernst August's son George inherited Calenberg and Hannover in 1698, Celle in 1705 and the throne of Great Britain in 1714. This type was struck 1689 and 1692 and is rather scarce. It has the mintmaster's initials on the shield side and a different forest than Dav-6591, which it closely resembles.
