Brunswick-Luneburg-Calenberg 1688-RB 2 thaler Dav-LS244
This specimen was lot 1187 in Sincona sale 22 (Zürich, May 2015), where it sold for 2,000 CHF (about US$2,512 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"Braunschweig-Lüneburg-Calenberg-Hannover, Herzogtum, Ernst August, 1679-1698 Löser zu 2 Taler 1688. Zellerfeld Mit Wertpunze. Sehr schön. (Germany, duchy of Brunswick-Luneburg-Calenberg-Hannover, Ernest Augustus (1679-98), double thaler of 1688, Zellerfeld mint with denomination punched in, very fine.)"
The multiple thalers of Brunswick come in many different types, all rare and expensive. By punching in the denomination after the coin was struck, the same dies could be used to make double, triple, even quadruple thalers. This issue was accompanied by a 1½ thaler (Dav-LS245).
Reported Mintage: unknown.
Specification: silver, this specimen 57.01 g.
