Brunswick-Luneburg-Calenberg 1687-RB thaler Dav-6592
This specimen was lot 72198 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, May 2023), where it sold for $660. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Calenberg. Taler, 1687-RB. Zellerfeld Mint. Ernst August, as Bishop of Osnabrück. PCGS AU-53. Toned a mostly light gray hue with some glints of burnished champagne near the outer regions, this "wildman" crown presents a charming overall appearance and state of preservation. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection." This "wild man" thaler was struck 1681 and 1686-87 and is fairly common. Many similar thalers exist. Dav-6591 has the date at the top; Dav-6593 has the date at the bottom, Dav-6594 has the mintmaster's initials on the shield side.
