Brunswick-Luneburg-Calenberg 1687-RB thaler Dav-6591
This specimen was lot 55632 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Pittsburgh, PA, August 2023), where it sold for $504. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Calenberg. Taler, 1687-RB. Zellerfeld Mint. Ernst August. PCGS AU-50. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection." Christian Ludwig was duke in Calenberg 1641-48 and in Celle 1648-65. His younger brother Georg Wilhelm was duke in Calenberg 1648-65 and in Celle 1665-1705. Johann Friedrich, the third brother, was duke in Calenberg 1665-79. The last brother, Ernst August, was duke in Calenberg 1679-98 and elector of Hannover 1692-98. Ernst August's son George inherited Calenberg and Hannover in 1698, Celle in 1705 and the throne of Great Britain in 1714. Six different thalers are listed for this state in 1687:
- KM 320.2/Dav-6640 (bust obverse);
- KM 325.2/Dav-6638 (wild man) struck 1687-89;
- KM 265.1/Dav-6591 (wild man, date at top) struck 1680-83 and 1686-87;
- KM 279/Dav-6592 (wild man, date at bottom) struck 1681 and 1686-87;
- KM 293/Dav-6630 (bust obverse with beaded border) struck 1682, 1685, 1687;
- KM 306/Dav-6612 (leaping stallion) struck 1683-87.
The two wild man thalers (Dav-6591 and -6592) are the only ones not very scarce.
