Brunswick-Luneburg-Calenberg 1687 2/3 thaler
This specimen was lot 73554 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2023), where it sold for $336. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Calenberg. 24 Mariengroschen (2/3 Taler), 1687. Zellerfeld Mint. Ernst August. PCGS AU-55. A well and evenly struck example with an engaging mix of gun-metal and gold toning on an argent palette. An attractive, lightly worn example of the type. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection." This type was struck 1680-93 but despite the extensive production, it has a high catalog value. Another two-thirds thaler exists with a leaping stallion design (KM 315), struck 1685-88.
