G146-1136r.jpg

This specimen was lot 1136 in Goldberg Sale 146 (Los Angeles, July 2025), where it sold for $216. The catalog description[1] noted, "Bohemia. Kipper-Taler of 150 Kreuzer 1621. Dietiker-708. Kuttenberg. Ferdinand II, 2nd reign 1620-1637, German Emperor since 1619. Bust right. Reverse: Coat of arms on double eagle. Old scratches in obverse field. Toned. PCGS graded Fine Detail (Tooled). The Augustana Collection." The kipperzeit was a period (1619-24) when many princes of the empire reaped large profits by issuing debased and light weight coinage. Nowhere was this done more enthusiastically than in Bohemia, site of the early fighting of the Thirty Years War. Frederick V, the "Winter King" did it first, until his overthrow in 1620. Emperor Ferdinand II followed his example, tho he should have known better. This 150 kreuzer was minted in 1621-23 in Prague (KM 308), Kuttenberg (shown here) and Joachimsthal (KM 310). It was intended to pass for a thaler but was severely debased.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 25.3 g, 0.321 fine silver, 42 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: KM-309.
