Sincona sale 57, lot 3442

This specimen was lot 3442 in Sincona sale 57 (Zürich, May 2019), where it sold for 550 CHF (about US$655 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"TSCHECHIEN | Böhmen, Friedrich V. von der Pfalz (Winterkönig), 1619-1622. Kipper-24 Kreuzer 1620, Joachimsthal. Selten. Sehr schön. (kingdom of Bohemia, Frederick V of the Palatinate, 1619-22, kipper 24 kreuzer of 1620, Joachimsthal mint. Rare, Very fine.)"

Kipper 24 kreuzer were struck at Kuttenberg, Prague and Joachimsthal for the Protestant Frederick V. Altho nominally a one-third thaler, it is too light and is probably debased as well, being an inflationary issue (1620-24) of the Thirty Years War, along with six, 15, 48, 30, 60, 75, 120, 150 and 300 groschen. Once the kipper period was over, there was a concerted effort to recall and melt down the debased issues, accounting for their rarity today. Among the 24 kreuzer for 1620 are KM-228 (Joachimsthal); -239 (Joachimsthal, shown here); -242 (Joachimsthal); -227 (Kuttenberg); -238 (Kuttenberg); -241 (Kuttenberg); -243 (Kuttenberg); -226 (Prague); -237 (Prague mint); -240 (Prague).

Recorded mintage: Unknown.

Specification: silver, this specimen 7.08 g.
