Goldberg Sale 146, lot 1134
G146-1134r.jpg

This specimen was lot 1134 in Goldberg Sale 146 (Los Angeles, July 2025), where it sold for $192. The catalog description[1] noted, "Bohemia. 24 Kruezer, 1620 (Kuttenberg). Friedrich of Pfalz, 1619-1620. Crowned bust right. Reverse: Coat of arms. Pop 1; The only one graded at PCGS. Nicely toned. PCGS graded EF-40. The Augustana Collection." The kipperzeit was a period (1619-24) when many princes of the empire reaped large profits by issuing debased and light weight coinage. Nowhere was this done more enthusiastically than in Bohemia, site of the early fighting of the Thirty Years War. Frederick V, the "Winter King" did it first, until his overthrow in 1620. Emperor Ferdinand II followed his example, tho he should have known better. This 24 kreuzer was minted in 1620 in Prague (KM 237), Kuttenberg (shown here) and Joachimsthal ( KM 239). It has the same weight as 18 kreuzer of the prewar standard.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver.

Catalog reference: KM-243.
