Stack's Bowers 2023 ANA sale, lot 53727
SB823-53727r.jpg
Moravia in 1648, showing Brunn and Olmutz

This specimen was lot 53727 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Pittsburgh, PA, August 2023), where it sold for $504. The catalog description[1] noted, "BOHEMIA. Bohemian Revolt. 12 Kreuzer, 1620-CC. Olmutz Mint. NGC EF-40. From the Augustana Collection." Kipper twelve kreuzer were struck at Olmutz by the Bohemian Estates. The Bohemian Estates were the group of Czech Protestant nobility rebelling against Hapsburg policies of centralization and Counterreformation. The Estates' army was defeated at the Battle of White Mountain in 1620 and the rebels scattered and exiled. Altho nominally a one-third thaler, this coin is too light and is probably debased as well, being an inflationary issue (1619-20) of the Thirty Years War. Once the kipper period was over, there was a concerted effort to recall and melt down the debased issues, accounting for their rarity today.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver.

Catalog reference: KM-241.
