Anhalt (1620-21) 12 kreuzer
This specimen was lot 2009 in Künker Auction 425 (Osnabrück, July 2025), where it sold for €260 (about US$368 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"DEUTSCHE MÜNZEN UND MEDAILLEN · ANHALT, FÜRSTENTUM Christian I., August, Rudolf, Ludwig und Johann Casimir, 1618-1621. Kipper-12 Kreuzer o. J., Köthen, mit Titel Ferdinands II. RR Kl. Zainende, sehr schön-vorzüglich. Exemplar der Auktion Dr. Busso Peus Nachf. 294, Frankfurt/Main 1978, Nr. 1099. (Germany, principality of Anhalt, joint issue of Christian I, August, Rudolf, Louis, John Casimir, 1618-21, undated kipper 12 kreuzer, Köthen mint, struck in the name of Ferdinand II. Very rare, lightly clipped, very fine to extremely fine.)"
This kipper twelve kreuzer was theoretically worth one-third thaler, this coin is too light and is probably debased as well, being an inflationary issue (1619-20) of the Thirty Years War. Once the kipper period was over, there was a concerted effort to recall and melt down the debased issues, accounting for their rarity today.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: silver, this specimen 1,81 g.
