Künker sale 335, lot 4672
Moravia in 1648, showing Brunn and Olmutz

This specimen was lot 4672 in Künker sale 335 (Osnabrück, Germany, March 2020), where it sold for €170 (about US$223 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"RÖMISCH-DEUTSCHES REICH. Die Stände von Böhmen und Mähren, 1619-1620. Kipper-3 Kreuzer 1619, Brünn. Münzmeister Peter Hema. Mit MORAV am Ende der Vorderseitenumschrift. Gekrönter mährischer Adler v. v. den Kopf nach l. gewandt, unten Wertzahl 3 in Oval//Mit Wein umrankte Pyramide auf Postament, zu den Seiten die geteilte Jahreszahl 16 - 19. Brause-Mansfeld - (vgl. Tf. 37, 5, dort von 1620); R Sehr schön. Aus der Sammlung Eberhard Link. Exemplar der Auktion Winter 25, Düsseldorf 1973, Nr. 26. (Holy Roman Empire, revolt of the Bohemian Estates, 1619-20, kipper three kreuzer, Brno mint, with "MORAV" at the end of the obverse legend. Obverse: crowned Moravian eagle with head to left, value below; reverse: a pyramid with a vine entwined around divides the date. Scarce, very fine.)"

Kipper three kreuzer were struck at Brunn and Olmutz by the Bohemian Estates. The Bohemian Estates were the group of Czech Protestant nobility rebelling against Hapsburg policies of centralization and Counterreformation. The Estates' army was defeated at the Battle of White Mountain in 1620 and the rebels scattered and exiled. Altho nominally 1/24 thaler, this coin is too light and is probably debased as well, being an inflationary issue (1619-20) of the Thirty Years War.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, this specimen 1,52 g.
