Künker sale 406, lot 4483

This specimen was lot 4483 in Künker sale 406 (Osnabrück, March 2024), where it sold for €280 (about US$367 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"RÖMISCH-DEUTSCHES REICH, Ferdinand II. 1592-1618-1637. Kipper-1/2 Taler (60 Kreuzer) 1621, Olmütz. Etwas Belag, sehr schön-vorzüglich. Exemplar der Auktion H. D. Rauch 64, Wien 1999, Nr. 1203. (Austria, Ferdinand II, 1618-37, kipper half thaler or sixty kreuzer of 1621, Olmütz mint. Some stains, very fine to extremely fine.)"

Kipper sixty kreuzer were struck at Brünn, Olmutz and Hall for the Hapsburg emperor Ferdinand II. Altho nominally a five-sixths thaler or gulden, it is too light and is probably debased as well, being an inflationary issue (1620-24) of the Thirty Years War, along with six, 15, 24, 30, 48, 60, 75, 120, 150 and 300 groschen. Once the kipper period was over, there was a concerted effort to recall and melt down the debased issues, accounting for their rarity today.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, this specimen 13.39 g.
