Jean Elsen sale 121, lot 1160
France 1704BB 10 sols rev JElsen 121-1160.jpg

This specimen was lot 1160 in Jean Elsen sale 121 (Brussels, June 2014), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, Royaume, Louis XIV (1643-1715), AR 10 sols aux quatre couronnes, 1704 BB, Strasbourg. Droit: B. drapé à droite. Revers: Trois lis entre quatre couronnes. Très Beau. (kingdom of France, Louis XIV (1643-1715), silver ten sols of the four crowns of 1704, Strabourg mint. Obverse: draped bust to right; reverse: three lilies between four crowns, very fine.)"

Shown is a 10 sols aux quatre couronnes (ten sous with four crowns) struck at the Strasbourg mint in the last years of Louis XIV's reign. The type was struck 1702-07 for France in substantial numbers but solely from the Metz ("AA") and Strasbourg ("BB") mints. This date is the commonest of the type. The SCWC lists this as a 1/8 écu but Droulers notes this coin is closer to a 1/7 écu.

Recorded mintage: 4,124,080.

Specification: 3.10 g, 0.833 fine silver, plain edge, designed by Norbert Roëttiers, this specimen 3,01 g.

Catalog reference: Dupl., 1550; Ci., 1961; Gad-132, Dr/4 № 710, Dr/2 № 513.
