from the Stack's Bowers June 2021 Collector's Choice sale, lot 72373
SB621-72373r.jpg

This specimen was lot 72373 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2021), where it sold for $3,600. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. 20 Pesos, 1898-Go R. Guanajuato Mint. NGC MS-61. AGW: 0.952 oz. Quite difficult to encounter in higher grades, this specimen is just one of three to attain Mint State status across both major services. Dazzling and brilliant, this golden-orange example offers a solid strike and a great chance at quality branch mint gold from late in the series." This specimen is one of a series struck at the Guanajuato mint 1870-1900. Although production was substantial, many dates are rare. Mintage figures are not a reliable indicator of rarity for this type due to the accidents of hoarding; many low mintage issues are readily available while other high mintage issues are very rare.

Recorded mintage: 7,710.

Specification: 33.84 g, 0.875 fine gold, .952 troy oz AGW.

Catalog reference: Fr-124; KM-414.4.
