The first specimen was lot 3404 in the Eliasberg sale, where it sold for $747.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "1898 R 1 peso. Guanajuato mint. MS-66 (NGC). Types as above. Lustrous light yellow gold. Struck from shattered obverse die. From the John H. Clapp Collection; Clapp estate to Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr., 1942." This date is known with the regular eagle and the slim eagle meant for the silver 5 centavos (shown here). The 1898Go 5 centavos is also known muled with the gold peso eagle. The SCWC does not list an 1898/7 overdate.

Recorded mintage: 5,193 (regular and mule).

Specification: 1.69 g, 0.875 fine gold, .047 troy oz AGW; this specimen: 1.69 grams, 15.00 mm diameter.
