Mexico 1898-Mo centavo

Ponterio sale 169, lot 11371

from the Mountain Groan Collection

The first specimen was lot 11371 in Ponterio sale 169 (Baltimore, November 2012), where it sold for $499. The catalog description^[1] noted, "MEXICO. Mexico City. Centavo, 1898-Mo. NGC MS-66 BN. Sharply struck and attractive." This one year type was struck in 1898 only at Mexico City, superseding the upright eagle type of 1870-97. It, in turn, was superseded by a smaller coin more resembling the United States cent. Fortunately, it is common in high grade as it is a very handsome coin.

Recorded mintage: 1,529,000.

Specification: 8 g, copper, 25 mm diameter, reeded edge.
