Stack's Bowers November 2023 Collector's Choice sale, lot 70638

This specimen was lot 70638 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2023), where it sold for $960. The catalog description^[1] noted, "MEXICO. 8 Reales, 1852-Mo GC. Mexico City Mint. NGC MS-61. Tied for third finest certified of the date with two other examples on either the NGC or PCGS population reports, only seven finer (NGC MS 62 [2], MS 63 [4] and PCGS MS 63). This handsome example offers bold frosty devices with lustrous surfaces. The fields display attractive mottled sunset hued patina." The Mexico City mint struck eight reales 1824-63, 1867-69, 1873-97. Most, but not all, dates are common. The SCWC lists assayer GC for 1848-55.

Recorded mintage: unknown but slightly scarce.
