Künker sale 264, lot 3081

This specimen was lot 3081 in Künker sale 264 (Osnabrück, June 2015), where it sold for €2,200 (about US$2,842 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"KÖNIGREICH Louis XIV, 1643-1715. Double louis d'or aux huit L et aux insignes 1702, A, Paris. Réformation. GOLD. RR Kl. Schrötlingsfehler, sehr schön. (kingdom of France, Louis XIV, 1643-1715, gold double louis of the 8 L's and insignia of 1702, Paris mint, struck on older coin. Rare, planchet cracks, very fine.)"

This type, called a double louis d'or aux 8 L et aux insignes was issued 1700-04 on new and "reformed" blanks and like all double louis before the 1740's, is rare. This type is usually found struck over older coins, a process involving all French silver and gold coinage during 1690-1709. These "reformations" were the result of financial manipulations too tedious to discuss here.

Recorded mintage: 131,783 (new blanks) plus 806,726 (reformed blanks)[2].

Specification: 13.350 g, 0.917 fine gold, designed by Joseph Roëttiers, this specimen 13,11 g.

Catalog reference: Dr/4 № 400, Fr-435; KM-335.5; Gad-261; Dup-1442a; DFW-289.
