Sincona sale 77, lot 2892

This specimen was lot 2892 in Sincona sale 77 (Zürich, May 2022), where it sold for 1,000 CHF (about US$1,214 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"HOLY ROMAN EMPIRE - AUSTRIA. Ferdinand II. 1619-1637. 24-Kipper Kreuzer 1621, Brünn. Münzmeister Hans Pecs, 1621-1622. Sehr selten. Sehr schön-vorzüglich. Überdurchschnittlich gut ausgeprägt. Etwas korrodierte Oberfläche. (Austria, Ferdinand II, 1619-37, 24 kipper kreuzer of 1621, Brünn mint. Very rare, Very fine-extremely fine, Extraordinarily well struck, Slightly corroded surface.)"

Kipper 24 kreuzer were struck at Brünn, Klagenfurt, Olmutz, St.-Veit, Vienna, Graz and Hall for the Hapsburg emperor Ferdinand II. Altho nominally a one-third thaler, it is too light and is probably debased as well, being an inflationary issue (1620-24) of the Thirty Years War, along with six, 15, 24, 30, 48, 60, 75, 120, 150 and 300 groschen. Once the kipper period was over, there was a concerted effort to recall and melt down the debased issues, accounting for their rarity today.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, this specimen 4.62 g.

Catalog reference: KM 301, Herinek 953. KM 302, also listed for Brünn, is a klippe.
