This specimen was lot 21476 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Las Vegas, August 2020), where it sold for $2,880. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. 2 Escudos, 1828-Eo Mo LF. Estado de Mexico (Tlalpam) Mint. NGC VF Details--Reverse Scratched. A VERY RARE type in any grade, this piece has seen some use in commerce and exhibits the noted scratches on the reverse, but nevertheless remains highly desirable and will assuredly generate great enthusiasm. Ex: E. H. Windau." The Estado de Mexico operated briefly in Tlalpam 1828-30 and struck silver and gold denominations, of which the two escudos is probably the rarest. State officials closed the mint in 1830, recognizing the futility of operating a mint so close to the central mint in Mexico City.
