The first coin was lot 9346 in Ponterio sale 150 (Los Angeles, August 2009), where it sold for $1840. The catalog description noted, "FRANCE. Ecu, 1704-A. Louis XIV (1643-1715). Ecu aux 8L 2e type struck over Ecu aux insignes (Gad-220). Exceptionally choice for this type and RARE in this grade. Nice strike, toned. NGC AU-58." Shown is a écu aux huit L, deuxieme type (écu with 8 L's, 2nd type) struck at the Paris mint in the last years of Louis XIV's reign. The type was struck until 1709; there are also ¼ and ½ écus struck during this period with this design. This date is the common date. The second specimen is a very rare écu aux 8 L, 2éme type, grande tête laurée.

Recorded mintage: 8,425,217 restruck plus 174,600 on new blanks.

Specification: 27.45 g, 0.917 fine silver, edge lettered "DOMINE SALVUM FAC REGEM", designed by Joseph Roëttiers.

Catalog reference: Dr/4 № 518, Dr/2 № 436, first specimen: KM 360.1, Dav-1320; second specimen: KM-362.1; Dav-1322; Gad-224, Dr/4 № 521, Dr/2 № 448.
