Heritage sale 3076, lot 33775
France H3076-33775r.jpg

This specimen was lot 33775 in Heritage sale 3076 (Long Beach, CA, September 2019), where it Sold for $780. The catalog description[1] noted, "France: Louis XIV gold Louis d'Or 1702-A UNC Details (Obverse Scratched) NGC, Paris mint. Overstruck on an earlier Louis d'Or of the same monarch. Exceptionally handsome for the type, the noted scratches barely noticeable next to the faint lines of the undertype, strong originality preserved throughout to very pleasing effect." Droulers[2] calls this type louis d'or aux 8 L et aux insignes (louis with 8 L's and insignia). This type is usually found struck over older coins, a process involving all French silver and gold coinage during 1690-1709. These "reformations" were the result of financial manipulations too tedious to discuss here. The louis d'or aux 8 L, struck 1700-04, was succeeded by the louis d'or aux insignes struck 1704-09. Droulers[2] notes this date as common for the type.

Recorded mintage: 28,126 new plus a substantial number on "reformed" blanks[2].

Specification: 6.75 g, 0.917 fine gold, reeded edge, 24-26 mm diameter, designed by Joseph Roëttiers.

Catalog reference: Dr/4 № 414, Dr/2 № 270, KM 334.1.
