Stack's Bowers February 2023 Collector's Choice sale, lot 72067
SB223-72067r.jpg

This specimen was lot 72067 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2023), where it sold for $900. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. Oaxaca. War of Independence. 8 Reales, 1813. PCGS AU-55. The always popular 'SUD' type. With a deep chocolate patina, this piece is rather alluring. From the David Sterling Collection." This type was struck 1811-14 in many varieties, this one being fairly common. A few exist in silver. Morelos promised to redeem these in silver after independence but his capture, trial and execution by the Spanish put an end to that.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: copper.

Catalog reference: KM-234; Cal-478.
