Mexico 1889-Ca M 10 centavos

from the Stack's Bowers 2017 Collector's Choice sale, lot 72730

This specimen is a fairly common date of a series struck 1871-96 at the Chihuahua mint. This ten centavos piece replaced the silver one real struck since colonial times. Several transitional designs were issued 1863-70, including one by the Maximilian regime, before settling on this type. It, in turn, was replaced by a ten centavos piece with a redesigned reverse in 1898. This specimen was lot 72730 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice Online Auction (Santa Ana, CA, May 2017), where it sold for $95. The catalog description^[1] noted, "MEXICO. 10 Centavos, 1889-CaM. NGC MS-62. Tough mint to locate in uncirculated. Good strike, lightly toned and nice eye appeal." An overdate, 1889/8, is listed for this date.
