Mexico 1883-Go B 10 centavos

from the Stack's Bowers sale of the Kirk Menczer Collection, lot 71323

This specimen was lot 71323 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, October 2025), where it sold for $360. The catalog description^[1] noted, "MEXICO. 10 Centavos, 1883-Go B. Guanajuato Mint. NGC MS-64. Second finest of two graded by NGC. From the Kirk Menczer Collection of Republican Decimal Minors." This specimen is a fairly common date of a series struck 1869-97 at the Guanajuato mint. This ten centavos piece replaced the silver one real struck since colonial times. Several transitional designs were issued 1863-70, including one by the Maximilian regime, before settling on this type. It, in turn, was replaced by a ten centavos piece with a redesigned reverse in 1898. Assayer B operated 1883-84.

Recorded mintage: unknown but reasonably common.

Specification: 2.70 g, 0.903 fine silver, 18 mm diameter, reeded edge.
