Sincona sale 18, lot 1539

This specimen was lot 1539 in Sincona sale 18 (Zürich, May 2014), where it sold for CHF 600 (about US$791 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Doppelter Vereinstaler 1854. Dresden Auf seinen Tod. Fast FDC. (kingdom of Saxony, double union thaler of 1854, Dresden mint, choice uncirculated.)"

On the occasion of the death of the king, two thalers were issued; a regular issue (Dav-881) and a mining thaler (Dav-882). They are identical except for the edge inscription. Both are fairly common. This double thaler is rather scarcer but fairly common for the denomination.

Recorded mintage: 6,148 plus proofs.

Specification: 37.12 g, 0.900 fine silver, 1.074 troy oz ASW, lettered edge, this specimen 36.95 g.

Catalog reference: Kahnt 457. Thun 331, Dav-880, KM 1183.
