Stack's Bowers 2023 NYINC sale, lot 41657
SB0123-41657r.jpg

This specimen was lot 41657 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2023), where it sold for $192. The catalog description[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN. Shilling, ND (1643-44). London Mint; mm: (P)/(P). Charles I. NGC VF-20. S-2800; KM-111." Charles' conflicts with Parliament and his subsequent inability to raise funds cramped the production of coin. The SCWC lists over fifty different types of shillings for Charles I, most without photos. Milled coinage finally superseded the hammered coinage in 1664. However, the old hammered coin was not called in and melted until 1696-97.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 6.02 g, 0.925 fine silver.

Catalog reference: S-2797.
