Great Britain 1643 double crown Fr-260
The first specimen was lot 116 in Sincona sale 75 (Zürich, May 2022), where it sold for 12,000 CHF (about US$14,566 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "Grossbritannien | Königreich. Charles I. 1625-1649. 1/2 Unite 1643, Oxford Mint. Declaration type. Bust to bottom of coin. Mintmark plume. Selten. NGC AU58+. Überdurchschnittliche Erhaltung. (Rare, Extraordinary condition.)" This gold double crown or ten shillings was struck by the king after he broke with Parliament and set up his headquarters in Oxford. The second specimen was lot 40123 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2024), where it sold for $24,000. The catalog description[2] noted, "Entrancing Plus Graded Declaration 1/2 Unite. GREAT BRITAIN. 1/2 Unite, 1643. Oxford Mint. Charles I. NGC AU-55+. A visually appealing and historically important piece from the Civil War Period, this "declaration" 1/2 Unite certainly has many merits. Displaying on the reverse the declaration made by Charles I in Wellington: "the Protestant Religion, the Laws of England, and the Liberty of Parliament" in abbreviated Latin. This example is close to as made, with only limited instances of handling on the highest elements, and a touch of the typical strike weakness. Much mint luster is retained, with a wholesome and bright sheen. A SCARCE chance to acquire an always demanded type for the connoisseur of British hammered coinage."
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 4.50 g, 0.917 fine gold, the first specimen 4.38 g, the second specimen 4.45 g.
