Great Britain 1644 crown Dav-3765
This specimen was lot 2880 in Goldberg sale 98 (Los Angeles, June 2017), where it sold for $1,703.75. The catalog description[1] noted, "Great Britain. Crown, 1644. Charles I, 1625-1649. Mintmark rose for Exeter mint. King on horseback left. Reverse: Oval arms. Toned. NGC graded VF-30. WINGS." While Charles had issued crowns in silver and gold prior to the Civil War, his urgent need for cash led him to open several provisional mints and issue crowns in a large variety of types. This is one of several struck at Exeter. The last gold crown was part of Charles II's hammered issue of 1660-62, after which the denomination was struck exclusively in silver.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 30.10 g, 0.925 fine silver.
